Well, we've been looking forward to this day for a long time. Cam couldn't hunt with me opening week because of his tonsil surgery, so he was really looking forward to getting a chance to go hunting. Noel...she was probably more excited than the rest of us, because this was her first experience out in the deer blind. I could tell Cam was excited when he ran up the driveway after being let off by the bus. They got to hold the rifle (unloaded of course) before we walked to the blind...and boy were they ready! We got out there, talked about being quiet, etc., and it wasn't 15 minutes and 6 deer started to filter through. We watched them for a few minutes, picked out the biggest doe and..."click", a misfire! I think I must have got a bad box of ammo because I had the same thing happen with a shell when sighting in this fall. Well, the deer jumped back a little and gave me just enough time to slowly rack another shell in the chamber. They started moving through again, I told the kids to cover their ears...and..."click". Not again!!! Yup...another misfire. I couldn't believe it. Well...the deer jumped again and I thought it was all over. We had three shells in the rifle, so we were down to our last chance. Unbelievably, the deer stuck around and came back through one more time. And as they say, the third time's the charm! The rifle erupted and our successful hunt was completed. A nice doe for the freezer and some great memories for myself and the kids. One more during black powder season for some jerky and sausage, and it will be time to dig out the ice-fishing gear! Get out there and enjoy the outdoors folks, and don't forget to take the kids.
