My wife and I hit Round Lake this afternoon launching a little after 3:00. We went up there for walleye, but I said we might as well troll for pike on our way to the deeper water. Cripes, I don't think 5 minutes had passed when Theresa hooked a real small northern. And I do mean small! Anyway, a couple misses and short strikes later, I hooked one a little bigger. Still nothing to brag about by any means, but I love to feel them smack that spinnerbait. At this time, we forced ourselves to go try for walleye. Well, the walleye kicked our little Rapid River butts! With water temperatures of 77 degrees, there is a pretty good thermocline that has developed at about 30 feet. You could clearly see the thermocline on the graph. So we hit the basin areas that get close to 50 feet and tried for all the fish we marked suspended. Most of the fish were between 20 and 30 feet. We got the boards out and tried both spinners and cranks but couldn't buy a bite. Then we worked over the edge of the sunken islands with bouncers and harnesses, but still nothing. On the way back to the launch, we again trolled the spinnerbaits and caught a couple more northerns. We had loads of short strikes that we just flat missed and never got a good hookset. This is another place a person could take their kids and have a riot catching all these small pike. The last fish I hooked actually felt pretty decent, but I can't say for sure as I didn't have it hooked for too long! All in all, a fun time on the water. The best drop-off with the highest numbers of pike holding is to the left when you come out of the little bay that the launch is on. One of our guests does real good on walleye up there but he only fishes at night. I guess we'll have to try that next time...
